Kerala’s education department has unveiled a plan to give Higher Secondary School students access to entrance exam coaching, forming part of the UDF government’s 100-day action plan. According to officials, the coaching effort will help students build readiness for exams like JEE, NEET and UPSC, with a September start date in view.
Two coaching centres will open in every district under the scheme. Twenty five teachers from LP, UP, HS and HSS sections will take part in a five-day training programme run by experts from IIM and the Institute of Management in Governance. Once trained, these teachers will build a foundation course for students, and a follow-up meeting will settle the remaining details.
A senior official linked to the project said students who show strong academic performance and interest in competitive exams will be picked for the programme, and a share of seats will go to students from weaker social backgrounds. KITE’s Key-to-Entrance sessions will support the classes, and teachers will stay involved to help students with doubts and extra guidance.
For students eyeing UPSC, the first phase of the programme will cover general awareness topics before moving into more focused preparation.
Officials within the department have offered ideas to sharpen the rollout as it takes shape. Some point out that raising the difficulty level of school exam questions could work well alongside the new coaching effort, while others want tighter coordination with existing support programmes so students benefit across the board.
A follow-up meeting this week will finalize the coaching structure, and officials say the department is moving toward giving more Kerala students a shot at competitive exam preparation.
