India strengthened its push to become a global education hub in May as Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan invited foreign universities and research institutions to collaborate with the country’s fast-growing higher education system.
Speaking at the Study in India Edu-Diplomatic Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, Pradhan addressed diplomats and representatives from more than 50 countries and highlighted India’s growing focus on innovation, research and international academic partnerships.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Education, aimed to expand cooperation between India and global institutions in higher education and skill development.
The minister said India is creating wider opportunities for students, researchers and universities through reforms introduced under the National Education Policy 2020.
He noted that the country is strengthening multidisciplinary learning, improving access to education and building a more globally connected academic environment.
Pradhan also highlighted India’s progress in sectors such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, semiconductors and sustainable energy. He said the country is emerging as a reliable innovation and research partner for the world.
Higher Education Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi said Indian universities are increasing international engagement through joint degree programmes, research partnerships and student exchange initiatives.
He added that the University Grants Commission has introduced a transparent and faster approval process for foreign universities planning to establish campuses in India.
The conclave included discussions on academic partnerships, skill development, technology, international campuses and Indian knowledge systems. Officials said the initiative would help strengthen India’s global education presence and attract more international students and institutions in the coming years.
