Background-

India’s agricultural higher education sector has entered the global stage, with institutions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research featuring for the first time in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

The rankings, released on March 25 by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, covered more than 21,000 programmes across over 1,900 universities. They assessed institutions on academic standing, employer view, research output and global links.

Two ICAR institutes secured positions this year. The ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) placed in the 51–100 band in Veterinary Science, making it the only Indian institute in the top 100 for this subject. The ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) entered the 151–200 band in Agriculture and Forestry, showing its growing global reach.

India also improved its presence in the Agriculture and Forestry category, with 10 institutions listed among 475 universities. Along with IARI, Banaras Hindu University, University of Delhi and Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur placed in the 151–200 band.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University ranked in the 201–250 group, while Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University entered the 301–350 band.

The development aligns with the national focus on building skilled talent, a priority highlighted by Narendra Modi. ICAR has stepped up efforts to strengthen research and education across its system.

M.L. Jat said the results reflect steady work in agriculture and animal health research. The performance of IARI and IVRI highlights their focus on research, field work and outreach, marking a strong step for India’s agricultural education system.
