Background
India has emerged as one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets, with over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users and education-related queries running at twice the global average. The company is expanding its education initiatives across higher education institutions and ed-tech platforms to build what it sees as a large-scale AI-enabled learning ecosystem.
In February, OpenAI partnered with six leading institutions, IIT Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad, AIIMS New Delhi, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, UPES and Pearl Academy, providing more than 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licences to students, faculty and staff. The company has also partnered with PhysicsWallah, upGrad and HCL GUVI to offer structured courses on AI fundamentals and practical ChatGPT applications.
According to OpenAI, these collaborations aim to help institutions become AI-native rather than simply providing students access to AI tools. The company said educational institutions are increasingly focusing on how they should adapt to an AI-powered future.
OpenAI has observed students moving beyond using AI for note summaries and exam preparation. Many are now experimenting with AI agents, research workflows, prototypes and developer tools as part of their learning process.
Faculty are now embracing AI technology, first as a means of reducing administrative workload and subsequently as an aid to pedagogical techniques. AI-driven simulation, customised learning paths, and case studies are slowly finding their way into the classroom, enabling faculty members to focus on coaching, creativity, and engagement.
OpenAI also recognises that AI literacy is an essential workplace skill set. According to OpenAI, there is now a realisation by organisations regarding the necessity of using AI in solving problems, communication and making processes.
As far as concerns the dependency on AI, it should be noted that according to OpenAI, AI should coexist with thinking and learning and the education process should be adjusted in accordance with this.
