Background
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Monday inaugurated higher education infrastructure projects worth ₹542 crore and laid foundation stones for several new academic facilities from the state secretariat.
The projects aim to improve access and strengthen facilities in government colleges across Tamil Nadu. Among the key inaugurations was a new Government Arts and Science College for Women in Mannargudi. The Chief Minister also opened new academic blocks in colleges located in Melvengadapuram, Thirukoilur, and Tiruvottiyur.
Additional infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories, workshops, and women’s hostels, has been developed in districts such as Dharmapuri, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Salem. Officials said these upgrades will help meet rising student enrolment and improve learning conditions.
Five government polytechnics in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai now have Industry 4.0 Smart Centres. These centres train students in advanced technologies and help match technical education with what industries need.
The Chief Minister also launched an Integrated Institutional Resource Management Software along with a Learning Management System (LMS) for government colleges and universities. The digital initiative, implemented at a cost of ₹198.84 crore, seeks to streamline administration and improve academic management through technology.
Foundation stones were laid for new Government Arts and Science Colleges in Aravakurichi, Thuraiyur, Anthiyur, Ulundurpet and other towns at an estimated cost of ₹180.08 crore. These institutions will provide more higher education opportunities in semi-urban and rural areas.
In addition, the government announced the construction of 437 classrooms, 19 multipurpose halls, hostels, and related facilities in colleges, including Nandanam, Presidency College, and Ooty. The total cost for these projects stands at ₹375.84 crore.
The state government said the initiatives reflect its continued focus on strengthening public higher education infrastructure and ensuring quality learning facilities for students across regions.
