Key Background:

The Ministry of Education in New Delhi published the NIRF 2025 rankings, which were the 10th edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework in India. The institute has not lost its quality as IIT Madras continues to rank highest in the engineering category, which has been ranked the best over the last decade.

IIT Hyderabad ranked seventh, and IIT Guwahati came in eighth. NIT Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) stood out as the only non-IIT in the top 10, ranking ninth, and IIT (BHU) Varanasi completed the list at tenth place. The rankings reflect the sustained prowess of IITs in engineering education as well as identify some of the best-performing NITs.

The NIRF began its first publication in 2015 and has been used to evaluate institutions in terms of teaching, learning resources, research, graduation outcomes, outreach, and perception. In engineering, special focus is given to research, employability, and international collaborations—factors that have helped IIT Madras maintain its top position.

The rankings also cover other categories. IISc Bengaluru ranked first among universities, with JNU, MAHE, and JMI coming next. Among colleges, Hindu College, University of Delhi, was ranked first, with Miranda House and Hansraj College following.

In research institutions, IISc Bengaluru secured first place, while IIT Madras was second. In the case of open universities, IGNOU was first in the list with Karnataka State Open University.

One of the points NIRF 2025 rankings underline is the importance of quality education, research, and innovation to define the organizations that ensure high education standards and provide the students with global opportunities.
