National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) held its 20th Foundation Day at the India International Centre in New Delhi, gathering higher education leaders to explore how the sector can shape India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
The session built around the theme “Role of Higher Education Institutions in Making Viksit Bharat@2047,” pointing to research, governance, leadership and institutional capacity as areas that will guide the country’s development path ahead.
Prafulla Ketkar, Editor of Organiser at Bharat Prakashan, spoke at the gathering and said reaching India’s development goals depends on young people rethinking their approach to knowledge, education and the country’s civilisational roots.
He pointed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to decolonise minds by 2035 and said higher education institutions have a part to play in pushing this change forward. Ketkar further separated the geographical idea of India from the educational and cultural identity that Bharat represents.
This conversation comes as India holds a young population base, with close to 65 per cent of citizens under 35 years. The government has set a target Gross Enrolment Ratio of 50 per cent by 2035, a benchmark that pushes higher education institutions to grow their reach and capability.
Over the current academic year, NIEPA delivered 128 national and international programmes covering 7,634 participants, with a strong lean toward evidence-based planning methods.
The Foundation Day gathering also marked the release of seven books tied to higher education, along with fresh international partnerships and two new postgraduate courses, a Master of Arts in AI Education and a Master of Arts in School Leadership.
Prof Rama Shanker Dubey, Chancellor of NIEPA, called on higher education institutions to work as hubs for knowledge, innovation and responsible leadership as India moves toward its 2047 goals.
Prof Shashikala Wanjari, Vice Chancellor, pointed to research, professional capacity building and institutional support as pieces needed to turn policy goals into real outcomes.
