Kerala has launched Digital Square, a new programme designed to bring technology into primary school classrooms and boost digital learning among young students.
Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education, the technology wing of the state’s General Education Department, introduced the initiative as part of the government’s 100-day action plan for education.
General Education Minister N. Samsudheen inaugurated the programme during a statewide orientation workshop in Malappuram. The event linked over 4,000 headmasters and headmistresses from schools across all 14 districts through an interactive video conference.
The programme strengthens digital literacy by weaving technology into classroom learning while encouraging self-learning, creativity and gamified education, officials said. It also builds an inclusive digital environment for students with different needs.
Government and aided primary schools with the necessary hardware will receive a dedicated software package built on Free and Open Source Software. The package includes accessibility tools such as audio assistance for visually impaired students and high-contrast interfaces for children with special needs.
It bundles the GCompris educational suite, the e-Cube language-learning tool, and applications for music, digital painting and animation, introducing students to concepts like animation, visual effects, gaming and comics from the primary level.
KITE CEO K. Anvar Sadath noted that the organisation developed the FOSS-based edutainment package to ensure equal access to quality digital tools without commercial lock-in, while building in filtering mechanisms and safeguards for young learners.
Alongside Digital Square, the state rolled out the Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 to guard students against AI-driven and online risks, the Tharapadham platform to track learning outcomes and attendance, and the School Wiki-thon campaign to build local knowledge repositories.
The government also plans to extend Little KITEs IT clubs to upper primary schools to nurture digital skills early.
