Background
The Ministry of Education plans to integrate artificial intelligence tools into teaching and learning at all levels, from kindergarten to advanced research, by the next academic year, officials said on December 11, 2026.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan shared the roadmap after meeting the founders of 10 leading AI-based ed-tech start-ups at IIT Delhi. The roundtable took place ahead of the Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave, which begins on December 12.
Officials announced that the government plans to unveil Bodhan AI at the conclave. The platform aims to function as a digital public infrastructure (DPI) for education. It will provide reliable application programming interfaces (APIs) to help start-ups build AI-powered tools for teachers and students.
Pradhan said the focus has shifted from only teaching AI concepts to deploying AI-assisted applications in classrooms. He highlighted the importance of ‘AI sovereignty’ and creating solutions for Indian languages and local situations. The ministry plans to use AI for teacher training, personalised lesson plans based on NCERT content, and targeted support for students in remote areas.
AI tools will also support skilling and upskilling programmes, officials said. The initiative follows efforts to expand digital access across rural regions.
Start-ups such as Arivihan and Vedantu showcased AI tutors and assistants that personalise learning, solve doubts during live classes, and assess subjective answers. Officials said insights from the roundtable will shape discussions at the upcoming India AI Impact Summit, focusing on responsible AI adoption and safeguards in education.
