Background
Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, launched the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) Digital University (NDU) Platform in New Delhi to provide digital access to students in India.
In addition to the launch of the digital university, Vaishnaw also opened five new NIELIT centres in Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Balasore (Odisha), Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Lunglei (Mizoram), and Daman. The project will offer industry-based courses and training facilities to the students, which will give them practical skills in the expanding digital economy.
Speaking to the media, Vaishnaw said the idea for a digital version of NIELIT began three years ago. “We began this journey to bring high-quality education to all students, even those in rural and remote areas. Today, that dream has come true,” he said.
He added that the university aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of providing technical education to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, villages, and underserved regions. The platform offers online courses designed for industry needs to help students get ready for future jobs and reduce the education gap in India.
The launch of NIELIT Digital University and the five new centres marks a significant step toward inclusive and accessible education. The platform is expected to provide students nationwide with the opportunity to develop modern skills, strengthen career readiness, and benefit from equal educational opportunities.
