Background
Amazon has teamed up with Telangana’s School Education department to bring artificial intelligence lessons into government schools, a step that will reach close to one million students each year.
The programme will run under the Amazon Future Engineer initiative and will cover students from Classes 6 to 9, making Telangana one of the first states in the country to add AI learning to regular school curriculum on this scale.
The State Council of Educational Research and Training built the curriculum with help from the nonprofit Pi Jam Foundation. Students will follow the lessons through the foundation’s CodeMitra platform, getting 25 hours of AI classes every year.
The syllabus takes in computational thinking, systems that help with decision-making, and how AI turns up in daily life, all meant to help students think better and solve problems on their own.
Ahead of the rollout, the state government trained more than 28,000 teachers to teach the new subject and upgraded classrooms to support hands-on learning.
Amazon will also hand over more than 2,000 refurbished laptops to 93 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and 152 Core Urban Region Economy schools across the state, giving more students access to computers.
The company plans to run volunteering sessions where its employees will guide students on careers and introduce them to emerging tech fields.
Principal Secretary of School Education Yogita Rana said the partnership would help government school students go beyond simply using technology, teaching them to understand and apply AI to solve everyday problems.
Amazon India Country Manager Samir Kumar said the tie-up shows the company’s push to spread AI knowledge among students who often lack access to such resources, and he confirmed plans to reach four million government school students across India by 2030 through curriculum work, teacher training and career guidance programmes.
