Background

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Ministry of Education has declared that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) will be integrated into the school syllabus starting from the 3rd grade. The project, funded by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L), is intended to equip the children with the necessary skills to face a future dominated by technology and, at the same time, instill the moral use of AI for the benefit of ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌society.

The Department is working with CBSE, NCERT, KVS, NVS, and State and Union Territory governments to create an inclusive and practical curriculum under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SE) 2023. On October 29, 2025, the Department held a stakeholder meeting with experts from these organizations to plan and shape the new framework.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has set up an expert committee led by Professor Karthik Raman from IIT Madras to create the AI and CT curriculum. Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of DoSE&L, stressed that AI education should be seen as a basic universal skill connected to “The World Around Us.” He said the curriculum must be broad-based, inclusive, and aligned with NCF SE 2023, adding that every child’s unique potential should be recognized.

By December 2025, the scheme will prepare the teachers with NISHTHA’s modules, produce resource materials that are video-based, and develop textbooks and handbooks. The two organizations, NCERT and CBSE, will collaborate for curriculum integration and quality ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌assurance.

The new AI and CT syllabus will start in the 2026–27 school year to help Indian students become future-ready and globally competitive in digital learning.
