Background:
In a landmark development for India’s aviation and education sectors, IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh on Tuesday finalized plans for the country’s first Aviation Educity in Visakhapatnam. The announcement came after a high-level meeting in New Delhi with senior officials of the GMR Group, a global leader in airport design, construction, and management, who will partner with the Andhra Pradesh government to bring the project to life.
The Educity is envisioned as a specialized hub for training and education in aviation, space, and defence technologies. Officials revealed that the project will involve collaboration with international universities possessing domain expertise, positioning Visakhapatnam as a global centre for skill development in high-tech sectors.
Highlighting the significance of the project, Minister Lokesh stated that the Educity will generate skilled manpower for the aviation ecosystem while attracting allied industries, research institutions, and training organizations. “This initiative will serve as a catalyst for long-term industrial growth in North Andhra and strengthen the region’s presence in the national aviation map,” he said.
The project is expected to strengthen the Andhra Pradesh Aviation Cluster, boosting the state’s capabilities in education, research, and industry. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu met with senior GMR executives.
